  • The Beatles cut nearly 300 songs for the BBC, the vast majority during 1963 when they were recording shows on an almost weekly basis. This hectic schedule slowed down somewhat the following year but they still managed to fit in ten shows in 1964. Their swansong programme, titled The Beatles Invite You To Take A Ticket To Ride, was recorded on May 26, 1965 at the Piccadilly Theatre and hosted by Denny Piercy; also on the show were The Lorne Gibson Trio, The Hellions, The Hollies and The Ivy League. •   (John) “It was great, ’cause I wrote it in the morning on the piano, and we booked the studio...’ and boom, I did it in just about three goes.” Live vocals over pre-recorded tracks for BBC.
  • REP044 The Beatles filmed a live performance for the American variety TV show ‘Shindig!’ at the Granville Theatre in Fulham on October 3rd 1964. The show features the first ever live performance of I'm A Loser.
  • The years 1968 and 1969 were turbulent years for society in general and the Rolling Stones in particular. Having decided that the psychedelia of 1967’s Their Satanic Majesties Request was not a good look, Keith Richards went back to his roots for the highly acoustic Beggars Banquet LP. Lead track Sympathy For The Devil made its world debut on David Frost’s primetime TV programme to a mixed reaction. It was the last time that Brian Jones would be seen on stage with the Stones: he can be glimpsed playing keyboards, and percussion on the opening verses. When the Stones recorded You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Honky Tonk Women for Frost the following year Jones was gone, replaced by Mick Taylor. For all these tracks Jagger sang over a pre-recorded backing track: Sympathy also benefitted from some additional Richards’ guitar parts. REP042

The Beatles 1966 tour of Germany, Japan, the Philippines and the USA began on Friday 24th June 1966 with two concerts at the Circus-Krone-Bau in Munich, Germany. Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) filmed the second show, and aired a fifteen-minute segment on Tuesday 5th July. The tour was sponsored by the entertainment magazine Bravo and also on the bill were Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers, The Rattles, and Peter and Gordon. The group performed the same 11-song set throughout the tour. ‘Rock And Roll Music’, ‘She’s A Woman’, ‘If I Needed Someone’, ‘Day Tripper’, ‘Baby’s In Black’, ‘I Feel Fine’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘Nowhere Man’, ‘Paperback Writer’ and ‘I’m Down’, occasionally substituting ‘Long Tall Sally’ as the final song. • In 1965 The Stones picked up NME awards for Best New GroupBest British R’n’B Group and Best New Disc Or TV Singer. They celebrated with a gig at the Wembley Empire Pool where their live prowess could clearly be heard, despite the screams of 10,000 highly-energized fans. Everybody Needs Somebody To Love was performed at a slower pace than usual and formed a medley with Pain In My Heart. Around and Around featured a pair of densely interwoven guitars whilst The Last Time benefited from distinctive Keith Richards backing vocals.
  • The NME called it “the greatest pop show in the world” and who are we to argue. The 3 ½ hour show was witnessed by 10,000 fans at Wembley’s Empire Pool who saw The Animals, The Bachelors, Cilla Black, Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, Freddie & The Dreamers, Herman's Hermits, The Ivy League, Tom Jones, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, The Rockin' Berries, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, The Seekers, Sounds Incorporated, Dusty Springfield, Them & Twinkle. The Beatles performed just five songs.
