The Who made their very first US television appearance before an astonished teenage audience in A.B.C. Television’s top rating pop show “Shindig”. Recorded on Tuesday 3rd August 1965 on Stage 3 of Twickenham Film Studios the live version of Daddy Rolling Stone was shown on Thursday 30 December 1965, introduced by host DJ Jimmy O’Neill. The other three tracks were all taped in 1965 for seminal BritPop TV show Ready Steady Go (“The Weekend Starts Here!”). The cover of James Brown’s Shout and Shimmy was performed on July 1st , whilst the explosive version of My Generation is appropriately from the November 5th show. The Who would have heard Man With The Money on the B-side of the Everly Brothers’ Love Is Strange, this recording also comes from November 1965. These performances were a sensation – television viewers had never before seen a group that visually and musically flouted every known convention.
